Weekend Snapshot: Number One

Weekend snapshot is a new blogger photo activity. Every Monday participants will post a photograph which speaks in some way to the weekend. You can go here to find out more. I am posting early because I'm not sure how tomorrow will shape up for me, what with work and other things that rear their heads on Monday mornings. Also, except for the first time, I have been posting my Saturday photohunt shots on Friday, so why not post my weekend snapshot on Sunday instead of Monday. Saturday mornings at the garden center are particularly fun this time of year since there aren't as many weekend gardeners there after July. The photographs below were taken after I returned home. I'm getting psyched about my fall/winter garden.I haven't had a winter garden in two years because I let myself get, well, lazy. No excuse since I'm well set up for year round gardening.
So this year, I'm turning over an old leaf to grow some new edible leaves for fall and winter salads. On Monday, you can go here to find other weekend snapshot participants. Note - this is the first week for WS so I'm not sure what others will be doing with it. I'm probably going to use it as a way to post photographs which illustrate my weekend but I'll also be talking about whatever is on my mind.

The shot below isn't a weekend shot and I think I've posted it on my blog before. I am so tired of the heat I thought I'd remind myself of one of my best winter gardening years. Believe it or not the boxes below were filled with healthy lettuce and other greens which survived quite nicely for at least half of one of our colder winters.

Hi Hummie, Thanks for stopping by. If you are interested in participating in WS you should check it out. A comment was left on my site about it and I thought it sounded like fun so I'm giving it a shot.

Hi Gledwood. Actually we're having a very weird September. It's more like the middle of summer. It's unseasonably hot. Because we are also in an extreme drought there is plenty of brown. The colorful tree and plants at the garden center are the exception and they must be watering very intensively. We have city wide watering restrictions for private residences but exceptions are made for gardening centers, nurseries and of course farmers. I do still have a fair amount of green at home but if it doesn't rain soon I won't. Thanks for stopping by.

What a wonderful idea. I'm new at gardening..so I will follow your blog and see what greens you can grow in those boxes. I will also check out WS...I tend to procrastinate a lot. Great pics.
Have yourself a great week!

That last shot makes me wonder how you can garden year round. I'm glad to not have to worry about my garden in winter, although a few things do their thing, like hellebores.
I see Gledwood has been by and Ruth's garden is amazing for such a tiny space. She's a good photographer and recently a widow so drop by and see what the great English gardeners can accomplish in limited space.
Have a great week Carver

Hi Matty, Thanks for visiting. I'll definitely take pictures when I have some new seedlings sprouting.

Hi JMB, I just went to Ruth's site and found her photo album with a tour of her 2006 garden. Unbelievable what she accomplished in such a small space.

Even when it's quite cold my garden boxes stay hot when there is sun and if I shut them up in the afternoon, they usually are fine at night. I was surprised my lettuce did well the winter we had a lot of snow (it varies from almost no snow to an occasional respectable one). It's hard to tell from winter to winter what it will be like here. I'll definitely take pictures and record what happens since my blogging and photography addictions seem tied at this point, Ha.

This is a good Weekend Snapshot! I love gardening too. My sister told me, why I could plant a flower without spending more time in taking care to grow.....that is what we call, we have a green thumb, Carver. *wink*

Take care and enjoy the week.

Nice pictures and I love flowers.
I didn't know you can garden in the winter. This is new to me.hehe!

Hi Ladynred,

I wouldn't be able to garden in the winter without boxes which I can close up and at times use supplemental heat. I also have a heater in my small greenhouse. It's pretty intensive in a way because it can be below freezing outside and burning up in the box from the sun so I have to remember to let some air in and close at night. I'll have to do a post about how I do it. Take care, Carver

Hey I saw you dropped by Ruth's ... isn't it a great place ... I heard you were having FIRES 20 times bigger than the ones in Greece which were bad enough... also is it true in Arizona they said they had 40 DAYS this year with temperatures over 110F!?!

Carver said...

Hi Gledwood,

The summer has been awful and it's still not cooling off where I live. I've also heard something similar about Arizona to what you've heard. Even where I live (NC), we had weeks in August where it was over 100 degrees Farenheit which is unusual and the drought is terrible. Even now it's not cooling off much.

The fires have been bad in parts of the U.S. but I haven't heard that stat about them being worse than what they've had in Greece.

I did enjoy looking at Ruth's garden. It's gorgeous.

Take care, Carver
