Photohunt: Self

The photohunt theme is self. Most of the pictures of myself which I've used for photohunt themes have been old ones. Therefore, I decided to do a very recent self portrait and show you what my fifty year old self looks like in May of 2008. I ain't broke but I'm badly bent. Just kidding, I stole the italic line from an old song.
I am probably most comfortable hiding behind the camera like I'm doing in the shot above. As visitors to my blog probably know, I like the take photographs. Therefore having a shot of me taking pictures seems to make sense in terms of this self portrait. I took the shot above outside a doctor's office. I find it relaxing to take my camera with me to doctor's appointments and grab a few photo ops as they come up, usually outside. The second shot is of me in my garden last weekend. I used the time release and set my camera on a small ladder for the outdoor shots. I love to be outdoors in my garden so that is a part of my self portrait. My garden is a bit on the wild side which suits me most of the time. I often mention my secret garden and as you can see in the shot above, I have privacy screening in the form of overgrown bushes. The last shot shows me in my garden drinking coffee with a raincoat over my nightgown which is pretty typical of me. I love coffee and I often go outside before I get dressed but I don't want to scare the meter readers so I try to remember to put something on over my nightgown. Unfortunately, my gas meter is within the borders of my secret garden, and if I am outside déshabillé, I run the risk of frightening the meter readers who run from yard to yard. I guess that's it for my self portrait and it's about time for me to get dressed.

Where the trails connect and such

Last week I posted about finding a new trail which I felt sure would connect up with the ones I normally walk on but I never got to anything familiar. Bill and I ended up walking on the trail on Sunday, and as it turned out if I'd walked a few hundred more yards last week I would have ended up knowing where I was. Pardon the quality of the photographs of this duck couple. Between the light and their movements, I didn't get any great shots but I still thought they were cute enough to post. Definitely a couple of love duckies.
When we got to the point of our walk where we were going to turn around, there was a sign posted about an upcoming meeting about the restoration of the stream. Not sure what will be involved but Bill said he would go and report back to me. I should probably go myself but he can fill me in on whether or not there will be volunteer opportunities that I could help with.
I definitely would be interested in helping out if I can, within the context of some of my current physical limitations. I try to pick up trash when I walk on the trails but I fear that's about the extent to which I have helped maintain these trails which I enjoy so much. Bill told me that stream restoration usually involves dealing with erosion and flood prevention but that these streams don't seem to have an obvious problem with those issues which is part of why he's curious about what the meeting will be about.
I decided to go ahead and put up a new blog header since May is almost over and my other one was about May being Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month. Since summer is starting soon where I live, I thought I'd still go with a safe sun theme. I don't know whether my melanoma was caused by UV exposure or not but I know that I for one will never feel the same way about unprotected sun. I don't hide from the sun but sensible precautions make sense.

Weekend Snapshot: Number 38

I usually work on my home computer but I had to go to the office in Durham on Tuesday for a meeting, and I had my camera with me. I didn't take the time to stop and take any pictures but I did manage to take a few from my car in downtown Durham near my office. The Durham Athletic Park above is where the baseball scenes in the movie Bull Durham were shot. Although the Durham Bulls moved to a much larger athletic park in 1995, the old park above is still used for amateur leagues. The old park happens to be close to my office so I snapped a shot on the way there. What I was surprised by was that after I left the office to drive home I noticed the mural below.
The mural made me think that perhaps the baseball had been knocked out of the park and was sailing over a skyscraper. You can click inside the photo above to get a better look at the mural and I also did a recent post with a closeup of the mural on my other blog. Before I got on the freeway that would take me home (I live about 30 miles from my office which is why I LOVE working from home), I took a few photographs of the downtown Durham neighborhoods which have been fixed up.In some ways Raleigh where I live, and Durham where my office is have both had a move back downtown in terms of the neighborhoods. The older houses which used to be decrepit and falling apart have been restored and fixed up and it's nice to see that. That's it for my weekend snapshots. I went for a walk on Sunday (today) with Bill on a new trail I stumbled across on Monday and found out where it hooked up with the trails I'm familiar with but I'll save that for another post.

Blog Blast for Peace Spread the Word

I am going to be flying my peace globe on June 4 for Mimi's Blog Blast for Peace. Below is the globe which I have personalized for the June 4, 2008 post which I will do. As will be explained below you can pick one of the templates and personalize your peace globe in any way you want.Although this did not begin as a tag type blogger movement, Mimi has decided to help spread the word via a tag. As some of you may have noticed, when I am tagged, I usually try to participate but rather than tag someone, I say that anyone reading the post should feel free to consider themselves tagged by me if they want to participate. That will hold true for this one. Since Mimi tagged me, my name is already on the list of links in the tag below, so I don't think I'm supposed to add it to the bottom too. I'm assuming if you are already on the list then you post about it but don't need to add you name. Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Below is how you can participate and spread the word.

BlogBlast For Peace Meme ~ Join The Revolution

Here are the rules and the story.
Copy this into a post, ADD YOUR NAME to the bottom of the tag list and tag as many people as you'd like.

The Peace Globe project began in the fall of 2006 with a simple post from one blog, Mimi Writes. The post ignited a flame in the blogosphere. The flame became a passion. The passion became a movement. It amazingly traveled from blog to blog to blog across the globe. Bloggers wrote passionate articles on what peace means to them, along with the promise of three Latin words scribbled on a globe - Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) - branded with the integrity of their names or blog names. It was positively inspiring to watch. And it began to happen all over the world - from Singapore to China to Afghanistan to Brooklyn.

It was simple. And powerful.

In less than two weeks bloggers from all across the globe will blog for peace.
We will speak with one voice. One subject. One day.
Won't you join us?
