In May of this year, the NCSU Bell Tower was struck by lightning during an electrical storm. The article at this link describes how a 1,500 pound chunk of granite was knocked down by the lightning and they had to rush to get it fixed prior to graduation this spring.
It's hard to get a good shot of the full Bell Tower while riding in a car, because of all the electrical wires. I've actually been thinking for some time about how next time I'm at the street across from the campus I would photograph the Bell Tower. As it turned out Bill and I drove by there on the way to Lake Johnson last weekend but the electric wires got in the way since I was shooting from the car.

Oh you know I didn't think about that way of using electric. The empress hotel has many top towers just for that sake too.. Great use for the theme!
Excellent illustration of Electric!
Ooo... tall one..
Huge! You did a great work, your pictures are perfect!
I didn't know about this tower, nice to learn with your post! Thanks my dear friend and a great weekend!
God bless you
great choice for the theme. The tower stands tall against the bright blue sky, how lovely.
happy weekend Carver.
Great post - love how you tied in several layers of electric in this. I remember seeing a story on the news about this lightning strike but didn't realize such a huge chunk fell off!
Hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather as much as I am. Have a great weekend.
You did a great job!
Great idea for this week´s theme.
that was a powerful electrical storm then, quite scary if you were around the area when that happened. great take.
Nice thake on teh theme, The power of natural electricity is awesome. Happy weekend
Interesting post for this theme Carver. Have a good weekend.
I quite like the middle one with the zig zagging lines. Your story reminded me of Back to the Future!
This reminds me of the Stanford clock tower for some reason. Maybe all universities, or most, have some sort of clock tower on campus!
Nice post for electric... loved the photos
Aaaah.... electric wires. The bane of so many photographers and ruin of a good many photographs! ;D
Wow, that must have been one strong bolt.
Happy weekend dear Carver :)
We don't get to see wires hanging around here these days :(
All are covered underground.
Scary to be struck by lightning. I have the same problem w/ those electric wires when taking pics. my PH is up too.
Today the electrical wires are just fine :-)
The wires knew you were doing a post on electric and wanted to be in the picture too:)come see where it all got started on my post
I played too :)
Yikes-- a 1500 pound chunk of granite?!?! Yow!
My Photo Hunters is up. I hope you have time to visit mine! New York Traveler.net
That was a powerful storm. I wouldn't not have wanted to be in the area when it hit. And aren't electric wires the bane of photographers. :)
Interesting contrast between power lines and the eXponentially greater power of a lightning bolt!
great story. If you want to wander down my road I’m home.
It's a lovely looking tower and I can see why it might have been struck. Pity about the cables (though not for this week!). I often don't notice them until I look at the photo later.
i have the same problem when taking photos. sometimes i dont even see the electrical lines until i pull up the images on the computer.
this is some information. and a lovely take for the theme.
This is one photo in which electrical wires are very OK to [hotograph! ;-)
