Nature Notes: November Walks

November has been very pleasant so far. We had our first hard freeze but I missed getting frost shots. The first morning I wasn't out early enough and the second I drove past frost covered grass I wanted to shoot but was in heavy traffic and put safety first.

I have taken a ton of photographs on my November walks and this is a mix of several walks at Shelley Lake over the past five days.

I felt kind of sorry for the goose above and below who made a beeline toward me when I was standing on a dock.
natnotescandgotowmnov7
Most of the geese were hanging out near the bridge where people were feeding them but this one seemed to spot me alone on the dock and I'm guessing thought it could be fed without competition. The problem was that I didn't have any food to offer it no matter how expectantly it looked at me.

I like to compare shots taken of the same place on different days and how the light and reflections make the same scene look very different.

It's been a rather slow fall in terms of some of the trees and as it gets colder I hope that we will not miss out on some of the color.
natnotefullshoreflshnov5
I like the way some of the trees have lost their leaves letting in a lot more light on walks. Lots of color but also more open spaces.
natnotecolclrnov7
In addition to more light on the trails there are different views through the trees on the lake as more openings are created by dropped leaves.
natnotescomernov7ttr
The cormorants are back to staking out the pilings for their perches.
natnotescoumernov7
The are fun to watch and they look like they in turn have fun watching what's going on around them.
natnotesingcoumnov7s
The lighting made the trees across the lake almost look like an artificial fire.
natnoteslikefirnov7
I thought the duck and canadian goose made an appealing pair.
natnotespariwhtcangnov7
It fun to me how the brightly colored jackets at a distance add to the colorful leaves closer to where I'm shooting.
natnotenov7wkjackcllv
On the bridge the stroller and jackets again add to the autumn foliage.
natnotesbrdgshtcolnov7
I guess I'll end here. Hard to pick shots this time of year because I take so many.

The photos are really beautiful. I still can't believe I've lived here all these years and I've never been to that lake.

I love your walks and how you really show off Mother Nature to her best advantage. I wonder if that white duck is really a goose and is a mate to the Canada goose. If so I would love to see the offspring. Don't worry about not being able to feed the goose. Unless you had some game bird pellets, they are better off eating the vegetation that they can find. I have a pair on the lawn looking at me and I am done feeding the waterfowl for the season...time for them to find a good winter feeding ground...Michelle

You walk in such beautiful places. The trees are lovely just now and I love the photo of the duck and goose. :)

I'm so glad I don't have to paddle around in the chilly water or stand in the cold air waiting for my feathers to dry!

I’ve now used all the allotted space for photos on Pictures Just Pictures and have started a new blog so I can carry on. It’s called

Message in a Milk Bottle
http://messageinamilkbottle.blogspot.com/

I’ve given it a new look but its purpose is unchanged - a photo a day.

I know the feeling about selecting shots once you have the clicking disease.
Beautiful autumn colours and birds. With a lake like that to walk around I probably would hardly ever be at home.

Your lake shots are beautiful. Glad it hasn't been too cold yet for you.
"put safety first" - but the thought did cross your mind to get a photo...

The reflections really make such a difference in the water shots. Nice November for you!

Some beautiful scenery from your walks, I hope your trees will show their best this year. They have been wonderful this year in the UK, we are having rain and strong winds right now so all the leaves are being blown off.

A gorgeous series of photos all of them but I loved the one of the patterns the duck made in the water. Really neat.
