Nature Notes: Mostly about the Birds

I like the way the male and female cardinal were getting ready for his and her baths.
natnoteDSCN9286
Not a very good shot of the carolina wren but I thought it looked like a big leaf.
natnotecwDSCN9253
I wonder how many cardinals live in my yard.
natnoteDSCN9271
I've spotted bunches of them at a time.
natnoteDSCN9279
The male cardinals are so flamboyant.
natnoteDSCN9281
The birds seem so exposed in bare trees.
natnotebDSCN8984
The American Robins are spending more and more time in the trees as opposed to on the ground.
natnoteDSCN8987
They do come down for a drink of water.
natnoteDSCN9051
The red-wing blackbirds are more noticeable lately (thanks to Michelle for the I.D. help a week or two ago). You can barely see the red and yellow markings in this shot but they have them which helps with identification.
natnoteDSCN9059
The cardinals usually go to the deck bird baths but occasionally I see them in the front yard bath.
natnoteDSCN9071
The female cardinal and sparrow were sharing a bath for drinking water.
natnoteDSCN9084
The sparrows are very patient in the front yard watching the bird bath for their turn.
natnoteDSCN9097
There is something very beautiful to me about early winter trees.
natnoteDSCN9153
The front yard bird bath is popular with the rufous-sided towhees.
natntnotDSCN9046
Another nearly naked tree.
natntoeDSCN8995
I think the next bird is a grackle with it's bluish tint which would be more noticeable in better ligthing.
natntoeDSCN9023
I'm not sure about the next one. Maybe another grackle.
natntoeDSCN9036
The sparrow gets a turn in the bath.
natntoeDSCN9089
Light frosting on the leaves.
natnoteDSCN8923
Thin ice dumped from the bird bath.
natnoteDSCN8943
Bluejay preparing for a bath.
natnoteDSCN8950
Splish splash she's taking a bath . . .

While we see Robins and Redwings here in California, the Cardinals do not visit. I wish they did, they are so colorful.

You get a lot of variety of birds in your yard. Your cardinal shots show off a handsome guy (and the one with his and her baths is great). Red-wing blackbird - that's a nice capture.

Love the bathing birds.. I think the bird in your second photo is a red-breasted nuthatch. Cousin to the white-breasted nuthatch. They are coming down from the north for the winter due to the poor seed/cone crop in Canada.. check out a photo of one.. notice black eye band.. Michelle
