Nature Notes: More changes but no break from heat

I can barely stand to go outside. The heat and humidity wrap around me like a wet boiling hot blanket.

I am continuing to notice changes when I do venture out. There are far less bees than there were early in the season when the butterfly weed were in flower and the bees covered them as well as the rudbeckia and coneflowers. The lone bumble bee above looked like he was trying to burrow all the way inside of the hibiscus.

The dogwood trees are changing color slowly but surely. Every time I look a new leaf or part of individual trees is reassuring me that fall will come.

I don't have a clue why the dogwood trees are months ahead of the other trees in terms of fall foliage.

You probably can't even see the catbird above who is sheltered by the rudbeckia going to seed and by the overhang of vines on the deck wall. He did fly out though for a clear shot.

I have noticed that the bird activity is slowed down this time of year perhaps because they stay sheltered in the shade and venture out only for food and water.

I hope it cools down for you soon. We're having rain today and our highest temperature is supposed to be 70ish. These are wonderful photos as always. Love that little catbird.

it took me awhile to find the bird; thanks for pointing him out. here in california bay area we have not had a summer yet. they are now saying perhaps by this weekend we might see temps in the 80s. something about la nina; and it is said not to affect our winter ahead at all - not an indication of a lot of rain.

Gosh, I commented on this yesterday. Well, I was just telling you that although our heat broke, the humidity hasn't.

If I have to go outside in the sweltering heat, I often put a wet towel over my head and shoulders. Especially the nape of the neck. It also protects your upper body from the radiant heat.
I am always excited by those first tell tale coloured leaves. At present we have almond blossom heralding our coming Spring.

Hope you get some relief from the heat soon! It's been hot and muggy here too. I am also seeing a lot changes toward fall. I noticed this week that the last of the robin's have left.

Have a great weekend Carver!!
