Nature Notes: February ending March beginning

This time of year I always look for the carolina chickadees in the dogwood trees, and frequently spot them.

The Japanese Magnolia (tulip tree) is almost in full bloom.

Most of the other trees are still wearing winter's bare elegant branches.

More and more of the narcissus are bursting into bloom.

Arija said...: I find it a tad confusing how the Magnolia is referred to as a tulip tree in N.America when the real tulip tree, Liliodendron tulipifera is a native of your country. Ah well, that is the confusing bit about common names.

Arija said...: Nice to see you doing some research on both trees. The difference is in the genus, there one is Liliodendron and the other is Magnolia. Under normal circumstances one does not go further into their lineage. Just like Prunus comes under the general cover of Rosaeceae which covers not only plums but all stone fruits, roses, raspberries, strawberries and so many other plants..
Thus it is Liliodendron tulipifera and Magnoliasoulangeana, stellata ro many more varieties.
