Nature Notes: Early spring at Shelley Lake
For this week's nature notes, I thought I'd look for signs of spring at Shelley Lake.
The most obvious sign of spring is how the ducks and geese are pairing off into couples.
There aren't any flowers blooming around the lake or in the woods yet except for a few isolated trees with early blooms, but there are lots of couples.
I do enjoy seeing a few trees with the beginnings of flowers, mostly ones that get some sun as opposed to ones in the woods.
The high stepping geese amused me. The shot is a little blurry because they were walking straight at me.
I like the way there were sprays of a tree beginning to flower next to a tree that was still bare naked
The different stages of growth and changes side by side are my favorite part of spring and also of fall.
During the changing seasons there is often a little bit of everything.
I always try to document the early phases of spring and fall because those are the times of year where there is often a lot of contrast.
It's fun to watch the seasons at the lake because there are so many changes both with the water birds and the plant life.
The noise factor with the geese is extreme this time of year. That's the biggest change I noticed before I even got to the part of the path where I could see the lake. I could hear the geese and ducks chattering at each other.

What beautiful couples. I love the big Canada Geese coming at you. They can get quite cranky at people. I once had one nip my leg when I got too close to her ducklings.

You did a great choice for this theme.I think love is in the air and it's a good sign for early spring!
Wonderful pictures!

Great Nature Notes!!
I guess we are on the same wavelength. I do love the waterfowl and you have a beautiful place to visit... Michelle
Wonderful series on the couples. Great shots.
So nice to see all those birds and beautiful surroundings. Lovely photos!
I would love to come visit the lake, too. Looks like a calm, relaxing place.
Wonderful photos. You have a great eye!
those ducks look like they are running right for you. were you running backwards taking it? we are having yet more rain today and then a warming spell this weekend - into the 70's. Looking forward to a road trip to take photos
I'll say they are coming right at you! I hope that photo of the geese is cropped so well that it only appears you were lying on the ground. It's a magnificent, awesome shot. Don't misunderstand. But you could've gotten hurt! But I love the shot and wish I had done it!
Great choice for Nature Notes! You really did a nice job of capturing those couples, especially the geese.
Wonderful photo series with LOTS of signs of spring. Love the reflections in the last shot especially.
Hugs and blessings,
I LOVE these photos of the ducks and geese. They are beautiful.
