In the next shot the two red-wing blackbirds were more interested in their separate bird baths than in conversation.
I'm not sure what bird flew past the frame in front of the bluejay I was shooting below.
It has been cold and wet. Last night was barely above freezing. I'd almost rather have snow than cold rain.
The American Robins were surprisingly active today. They usually stay up in the trees more this time of the year but they were on my deck a lot.
All the birds have been trying out the replacement baths.
The good thing about the planter saucers I use to supplement my more permanent bird bath, is they are inexpensive and when they get too worn out I bring on some new ones.
Male cardinals are such flashy birds.
They live in my yard year round and brighten up winter a lot.
I think it's interesting how trees form growths over areas where limbs break off.
I like the soft color of the female cardinals.
The tree below is full of birds.
The next shot is a close-up of one of the birds in the tree.
I'm not sure what bird was checking out the damaged nesting box. Maybe a bluebird. The entry hole is too wide for nesting even if it was nesting season which it's not. I think a woodpecker tried to enlarge the opening and then realized it was too small for it to nest in. I have other nesting boxes like that one that aren't damaged and get used but it's too bad that one was damaged some years ago.

The tree growth was a different kind of shot - interesting. Yes, male cardinals are flashy! Curious about your theory of the woodpecker and the opening.
Lovely images, Carver. the Bluebird does look like it is looking for a home. They will stay inside the boxes during the cold winter nights to keep warm.
Lovely post ..it doesn't look cold there yet (but I believe you that it is... I HATE cold rain, which is why we don't stay here in Oregon during the winter)...Your birds are lucky to find warm houses and plenty of water in your beautiful yard.

Now I have it right.. Yes I agree with you as we had cold rain and now snow and I will take the snow.. I love the birdy conversations.. The 2 birds with yellow wing bars that look like starlings are a red-wing blackbird pair. The black male hides his red wing bars except during the breeding season and the female is kind of plain but has yellow wing bars.. I learned the hard way after thinking they were starlings too. Love the cardinals...Michelle
Thanks for the help with the identification. I updated the post and changed the names from starling to red-wing blackbird.
I love the bird shots (and it was a red wing flew in front of the Jay)...great shots here, loved this post!!!
