They can handle frost and even some snow.
If they have enough mulch around them they can survive moderate winters.
In central NC where I live, it depends on the individual winter as to whether the pansies make it.
They are popular in planters around town this time of the year. I photographed these at a corner shopping area.

Oh whenever i see pansies, i stay with the pictures for so long, that is because it is one of my favorites like you. The problem with me is that they don't grow in the tropics, so I've seen them in person for only 4X yet in this lifetime. I am also amazed at the so very many colors and expressions these flowers show!
These are so lovely! Very pleasing.
Those are beautiful!

Lovely, my flowers are all gone :(
they're pretty--they look like butterflies.:p
These pansies are glorious! Striking colours and patterns!
It is so nice to see some color when all the other flowers have gone. Lovely Carver! Thanks for sharing again with Today's Flowers.
We just planted a bunch of pansies outside the kitchen window. They make it pretty well here in VA.
I wish pansies were still flowering here!
They're so pretty and so delicate looking for such hardy flowers. You have a lovely variety. They were the favorite flower of Bill's grandmother, a great gardener, who gave us a lot of starts (of other plants) and helped us plan our yard when we bought our first house. I never see them without thinking of her.
