Photohunters: Informative
I have gotten in the habit of photographing informative signs when I visit somewhere new.
Once I download the photographs, I can enlarge the text on my computer and read the signs at home.
Even if I read informative signs when I am visiting somewhere, I know I'll forget what I've read so I like to have the photos at home to refer to.
These signs were taken at Thurmond, WV a town which is virtually abandoned at this point. Once the railroads switched from steam to diesel, and there was less coal mining in the area, the town died. Below is a shot of what was once downtown Thurmond. This website has more information about Thurmond since you won't be able to read the photos of the signs I included. I can read them because on my computer they are very large files and are readable when magnified.

Great informative pics, especially the train tracks I too enjoy reading signs and especially historical plaques. :)
Happy photo hunting!
It looks like a lovely area. I hope that one day a local group can find a way to re-invent the town with new ideas.
"Once I download the photographs, I can enlarge the text on my computer and read the signs at home." - I've done the same - it's a great idea, especially since I'm usually with my family, and they are rushing me along.
hope your trip was enjoyable. i like the perspective of the last photo.
we have almost identical post today except that my informative is inside the train car and yours is outside.
happy weekend.
It's informative! Great photos. :)
Have a fabulous weekend!

Excellent take on the theme. So many towns have died with the end of the major industry... sadly
LOL. I do this too now, saves making notes doesn't it?
Great idea for the theme. Happy weekend to you Carver.
Thanks for the information. Lovely railroad photo. Good capture, lovely perspective! :)
Gotta love the trains!
Warning: Ick-factor in my post this week.
Interesting post, Carver. There are villages in Hong Kong that are like Thurmond -- in that they were once striving but now are largely, if not completely, abandoned. In some cases, it's really hard to imagine them as bustling spots but in others, there's enough to do so.
I do the same thing. Great choice.
our cameras have become the extension of our memory.:p i love the informative signs here and the last photo.
Very interesting historical pictures in b&w but I prefer your last shot, it's amazing!

Now that looks like an interesting place. I sure hope they recovered economically.
Happy weekend Carver!

Wow - there is a ton of information in those pictures - greta shots for this week's theme.
I take pictures of the signs, too, and it usually is because the kids are rushing me along.
What a great idea..I will have to do that...I love traveling by train, but it's hard to really get anywhere on them anymore..but I find it relaxing.. unlike flying...
Very imformative post and photos. Perfect for the theme.
That's funny - I do the same thing, since I tend to forget names and don't digest information very well (and usually am on a tight schedule wherever I go ;-))
Love the train track shot!
