Nature Notes: August has Arrived with Rain

Fortunately August has brought significant and much needed rain.

The rain didn't come in time to save the hydrangea blooms, although the bush looks much healthier after getting a long drink.

I am pleased to see premature signs of fall. Now if the temperatures would drop, I would be ecstatic.

I have noticed in recent years that mid to late August has had welcome drops in temperature.

This would be a great year to have a cool down in August since June and July broke heat records left and right.

Even just seeing some unexpected early signs of fall lightens my spirits.

Below is an American Robin on the first day of August 2011.

I'll end with a female cardinal. All of these shots were taken on August 1, 2011 unlike most of my nature notes posts which cover all the days after my last nature post. I'm ready to say goodbye to July so I'm just using shots from the first day of the new month for this week's post.

Beautiful photos! And thank you for sharing.
For hydrangeas the rain is a blessing. I have several hydrangea bushes in my little garden. They need a lot of water.

Hooray for rain! That shot of the drops on the leaf just looks wonderful! We are just now getting summer weather here in Oregon. Sun has been shining for a week and no dampness. Most days up until last week were overcsst and coolish. So I'm enjoying the summer, but I don't blame you at all for being tired of it. Poor hydrangea -- that really tells the tale of too much dry heat.

We too broke heat records. Lake Erie is 80 degrees and that doesn't happen. I am glad you got some rain. I LOVE that you added a photo..I love putting a face to the name!!!!!

I hear you on the heat. 117F here today and wind. Feels like a blow dryer out there on full blast. Some dust, but at least the dreaded humidity isn't there yet.

Love you shots, as usual a bright sight in my day :D
