Nature Notes: Watching the leaf change

I am so excited. The leaf I posted last week which I saw as an early sign of fall has changed from bronze to a reddish hue.

It doesn't take much to get me excited about signs of summer ending, although it will be quite a while before fall.

I can't believe I finally managed a shot that shows the cottontail's tail.

I thought the guy below was a dragonfly before I got close enough to see that it was something else. I don't know what it is but it's the size of a dragonfly but obviously isn't one (unless it's not mature since I don't know what they look like where they're immature).

The brown thrashers crack me up with their big mouths and wild eyes.

The one below is scaring the mourning doves (hidden) away.
natnotebDSCN6019
The doves move to the small bird bath that needs the water changed which I do after the photo shoot.
natnotbdDSCN6026
I am excited to see that we are actually getting a break in the heat in a few days.
nanotebrDSCN5985
It's a fairly modest change but it's enough to get me excited.
natnntDSCN5982
The catbird above always stakes out the big birdbath while larger birds often end up in the small one like the cardinal below.
natnotcrfDSCN5971
The finch wants to join the cardinal but it's a no go.
natnotcardfDSCN5970
He stands stoically waiting for someone to leave one of the baths.
natnotfnDSCN5968
It will be interesting to see how much longer the cardinals have immature feathers.

I'm fascinated that you have so many birds visiting your saucers on your porch!

I bet you'll be glad when the worst of the summer's heat is over!

Love the running commentary on the activity around your bird baths. And for some reason wet birds always bring a smile to my face.

I'm looking forward to fall too. It's unseasonably cool here today, and I'm struggling with the urge to call off work and go play in the yard.

Beautiful leaf and wildlife shots!
Cute little cotton tail :)
Glad you caught a shot!
Your UFO could be a type of Robberfly?

wow - it has been a long time since I have visited. I love these new photos you are putting up - did you get a new camera; loving the macros; the perspective on the leaf. and of course I always love the birds bathing; how unkempt they are. I have tried to get similar shots - but you must be getting right there on the floor with them?! I envy your abundence of birds. I only have the two kinds of birds and a random unruly squirrel. The fly you found is a robber fly, but I don't know the exact species. They are scary looking and excellent hunters, catching other insects in flight. I've had a similar one land on me while I was sleeping, waking up and seeing it on my pillow was one of the very few occasions I ever screamed.

I enjoyed looking at these bird photos. Maybe because we don't see these in our backyard.
